Hotels are often energy intensive, with laundry rooms, restaurants and guests' bedroom all contributing to a high demand for both electricity and hot water. Where a swimming pool and/or other leisure facilities exist, this demand is even greater. Low carbon heating plant such as combined heat and power (micro or small-scale) and biomass boilers can reduce the annual costs associated with this energy demand, and at the same time can significantly improve the environmental performance of the site.
For hotels with swimming pools or spas, there is usually a high year-round thermal and electrical demand, and combined heat and power systems are ideally suited to these applications. For the majority of sites, micro-CHP with an electrical output of 1-25kW will present the optimum solution, and for hotels that are not connected to the mains gas network LPG models are available.
Biomass heating systems, whether wood pellet or woodchip, can be a viable and cost-effective option for larger hotels, particularly for more rural locations. When the Renewable Heat Incentive is introduced (2011-2012), sites with biomass boilers may be eligible for large payments for the renewable heat that is produced. This will enable financial payback to be achieved in as little as 3 years.
